A Grant Arrangement worth $5.6 million to support Green Recovery around the Aral Sea signed

Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) signed an agreement worth $5.6 million for the implementation of the “Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to address impacts of the Aral Sea Crisis”.

The Project aims to assist the Republic of Karakalpakstan’s green rehabilitation to address the adverse impacts of the Aral Sea ecological crisis and establish viable measures to pursue disaster-resilient sustainable livelihood for communities of the most affected districts. 

The agreement was signed by the Director of KOICA Uzbekistan, Ms. Park Sunjin and GGGI Country Representative, Dr. Aaron Russell, at the Embassy of Korea in Uzbekistan.

The parties discussed cooperation issues within the framework of the project, which is planned to be implemented in the Aral Sea region, as well as future tasks and measures to increase the effectiveness of the project.

The project for 2021-2024 will be implemented in 4 districts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan – Kegeyli, Bozatov, Chimbay and Karauzak districts.

As part of the project, it is planned to create a green recovery investment plan by improving the financial capacity of local enterprises and farmers in climate recovery activities, strengthening the capacity of small farms to respond to the Aral Sea crisis, developing a climate-friendly agricultural business model and improving the resilience of small farms and local enterprises in the Aral Sea region to natural disasters.

Following the meeting, the parties exchanged views and proposals on overcoming the consequences of the environmental crisis in the Aral Sea.
