From ancient times, the great ancestors of the Uzbek and Tajik peoples have made a significant contribution to world civilization with their joint scientific, literary and cultural heritage.
Recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by the prestigious international organization UNESCO, the "Shashmaqom" series is a great example of such common musical values. Nuriddin Abdurahmon ibn Ahmad Jami, a Persian-Tajik thinker and poet, who followed the encyclopedic scholars such as Abu Abdullah Rudaki, Abu Nasr Farobi, Abu Ali ibn Sino, Safiuddin Urmavi, Abdulkadir Maraghi and raised their musical teachings to a new level in the creation of classical statuses related to eternity.
Abdurahmon Jami, an encyclopedic scholar who lived and worked during the reign of the Timurids in Movarounnahr and Khorasan, studied religious and secular sciences at the famous Ulugbek Madrasah in Samarkand, and excelled in the practical and theoretical aspects of music, was a great representative of the Naqshbandi sect in Herat. Among his many followers, Mir Alisher Navoi, the pride of the Uzbek people, the sultan of the ghazal dynasty, a great thinker and statesman, has also matured.
The relationship between Abdurahmon Jami and Alisher Navoi, which began as a mentor and disciple, was later firmly bound in the test series of that period, which became a high symbol of the eternal brotherhood of the Uzbek and Tajik peoples. It is noteworthy that as a result of mutual spiritual support of these dignitaries, invaluable works in the field of classical literature, poetry, science and art were created.
These two great artists consulted with each other on their creative plans, reviewing each of their works. This creative collaboration was two-way, that is, as a student, Navoi not only sought advice and guidance from Jami, but Navoi, in turn, gave valuable advice to his teacher and Jami took them into account. “At the request of Navoi Jami wrote twenty-seven Tajik books and brochures dedicated to him. The author mentions this in the introduction to those works, said Sadriddin Ayni. In particular, at the suggestion and invitation of Mir Alisher Navoi, Hazrat Jami's "Treatise on Music" was created in the second half of the 15th century in the city of Herat, ruled by one of the Temurid princes Sultan Hussein Boyqaro.
Today, a unique manuscript of this brochure on musicology is kept in the manuscript fund of the Abu Rayhon Beruni Institute of Oriental Studies, Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences in a single volume with 28 other poetic and prose works of the author under the name Jami "Kulliyot".
At a time when the process of understanding the identity of our peoples reached a new level in the 1990s, the spiritual demand for Hazrat Jami's "Musical Handbook" as a scientific and spiritual heritage of our great ancestors increased not only among musicologists, but also among philologists, source scholars and folklorists.
In response to this demand, in 1997 the brochure was published in Uzbek.
Today, in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, the traditions of classical Maqom are given special attention and respect. It is noteworthy that on the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Uzbek National Center for Maqom Art was established, the International Conference of Maqom Art was held in Shakhrisabz, and the Shashmaqom National Holiday is celebrated annually on May 12 by the decree of President Emomali Rahmon.
Naturally, nowadays when the musical heritage of our great ancestors is being honored, the socio-spiritual need for Abdurahmon Jami's "Musical treatise" has increased. In this regard, the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences fully supported the request of the Tajikistan Academy of Sciences to republish the treatise by Hazrati Jami in accordance with the requirements of the time. A unique copy of this brochure, which is kept in the manuscript fund of the Abu Rayhon Beruni Institute of Oriental Studies, Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, was published in Dushanbe.
